Toll barriers on the M1 in Ireland have come under fire for costing transport firms thousands in fuel each year. Irish transport company Matthews Coach Hire have revealed results claiming that they would save 24,000 euros a year on diesel costs if they did not come across the toll barriers during their journey. The company monitored the fuel they use on each journey and found that each time they stop at a toll barrier its costs nearly an extra euro in fuel. The barriers cause what is thought of as unnecessary slowing down from cruising speed, which Matthews Coach hire have recorded, uses 0.6 litres of extra fuel on each trip they make. The company operate a service which travels from Dublin to the North East and therefore regularly use toll barriers on the M1.
